C18150 contains zirconium (0.05% - 0.25%) in addition to chromium, whereas C18200 contains only chromium. The inclusion of zirconium provides C18150 with a higher softening temperature, better wear resistance, and reduced tendency to stick to workpieces (especially galvanized sheet steel) during resistance welding.
The alloy is first solution heat-treated at a high temperature (around 900-950°C) where chromium and zirconium dissolve into the copper matrix. It is then rapidly water quenched. Afterwards, the material is aged at a lower temperature (typically 450-500°C) to allow sub-microscopic particles of Cr and Zr compounds to precipitate, drastically increasing hardness and strength while maintaining high electrical conductivity.
Due to its high softening temperature (500°C) and wear resistance, C18150 electrodes keep their geometry under the intense pressure and high current density of spot welding lines. It resists zinc contamination from coated steels, which otherwise degrades standard copper electrodes rapidly.
